It took me a while to find out how to do this cool effect in Photoshop, but it turned out to be REALLY, really easy! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create text that has an image or pattern as its background.

I’m talking about stuff like this:

peaches

dragonruit

You can choose ANY picture you want for this effect, and use it as your text’s background. Here’s how I do it using Photoshop, step by step!

Step 1

Open the image you want as the background.

If it’s a Background, turn it into a Layer (Layer > New > Layer From Background).

Step 2

Add text by selecting the Type Tool. The color doesn’t matter.

Step 3

Drag the image layer on top of the text layer.

Right-click the image layer and select “Create Clipping Mask”.

Ta-da!

That’s it!

Don’t forget to move the layers around in order to find the perfect spot. Above, I added two rectangles using the Shape Tool and converted them into a smart object along with the text. You can also use shapes instead of text to create a clipping mask.
